When Teams Get Stretched & Stressed

In the landscape of team dynamics, subtle yet profound indicators emerge when groups begin to feel stretched and stressed:

  1. Results overshadow relationships: Amidst the pressure to deliver, the essence of collaboration fades into the background, eclipsed by the pursuit of outcomes.

  2. Collaborating with team members turns to competing against them: What once was a symphony of shared goals now resonates with notes of individual agendas clashing against one another.

  3. The culture shifts from team-first to me-first: The harmonious rhythm of collective effort gives way to self-interest; the chorus of "we" diminishes into the solo of "me."

  4. Individuals stop supporting the goals and start sabotaging the mission: The noble pursuit of shared objectives fractures into a battlefield of conflicting intentions, where allegiance to the mission erodes beneath the weight of personal agendas.

Do you notice your team reflected in these patterns? If so, it's a signal that your team is falling short of its true potential.

Being stretched and stressed is exhausting!
However, it doesn’t have to be this way.

I’m Molly Grisham

I help build and sustain teams.

May, 2016. I sat in my office at the end of another long day and I could sense that my life was about to change.

After 18 years, as a teacher and coach at the college level, I realized I was more interested in developing my players as people rather than manufacturing a particular outcome.

But the system tells you to focus on the outcomes, not the people in the process. Results become more important than relationships.

Does this sound familiar?

It’s a system that turns the joy of the job into simply surviving another season. Stress leads to distrust, and any failure results in a culture of self-protection. I had the recurring thought, “It doesn’t have to be this way.”

For years, I had studied leadership. It became my passion, both personally and professionally. I read books. I wrote leadership curriculum. I turned my teams into leadership labs. And here’s what I learned:

The success of your team – whether it’s academic, athletic, or corporate – depends on the strengths and relationships of the team members, and the leader – YOU – directly influence that process.

So, I left my role within a broken system and dedicated myself to helping others thrive within that system. What did I discover?

I was capable of becoming a healthier leader, developing other healthy leaders, and influencing high-performing teams. The other lesson?

Leadership isn’t simply a skill that I could learn. I realized I was energized by helping others learn to become better leaders while developing high-performing teams.

I now work with teams in athletics, academics, and the corporate sector.

I provide team-building experiences, leadership development, conflict resolution, and team culture workshops, as well as tools for personal growth. My work is centered around experiencing lightbulb moments (ah-ha moments).

I don’t simply speak to a group, lead team-building exercises, or facilitate corporate workshops; I provide a transformational experience for participants.

My work can be done IN PERSON (face-to-face) or ONLINE (through remote platforms).

I’d love to talk with you about working together because it doesn’t have to be this way …

Leadership is Influence:

I believe that "a leader is a person of influence who uses their influence for good." Too often, leadership is talked about from a title, ego-driven perspective, but I believe that leaders must always be thinking about how they can use their influence for good. In this video, I share my thoughts on the idea that leadership is influence.

Leaders, Take Care of Yourselves:

Before you can take care of others, you must also take care of yourself. This can be a challenge for leaders who are often pulled in many directions. In this video, I share my thoughts on the value of leaders who take the time to invest in themselves so they can better lead others.

Leadership & Redwoods:

There are many mental pictures that help us understand what healthy leadership looks like and the Redwood trees are a great example. Like the Redwoods, leaders need to be intentional about who they plant themselves next to and how their roots connect with others. In this video, I share my thoughts on what leaders can learn from the Redwoods.
