Overview:
I am so excited about this format for this session! I want you to imagine that you have a front-row seat to a conversation taking place at my dinner table. Seated at the table are myself and three therapists and you get to witness our conversation. I will be asking all the questions that have been burning in my mind regarding mental health and student-athletes. I may ask things like; What do we know about brain development that might inform how we approach conversations about mental health? Should therapy be a requirement to participate in athletics? What does it mean to coach with a trauma-informed lens? If a student-athlete says they want to talk because think they are depressed should a coach talk with them or refer them to a counseling center? How is emotional wellness different from mental health? How do we approach a student-athlete who says their mental health is bad but they don't yet have a mental health diagnosis?
We are calling this session a "Q & I" which stands for "Questions and Insights." Mental health for student-athletes is complex, contextual, and very layered so our approach will be to hear from therapists who have different skills and have trained in different modalities. They will be sharing their insights rather than over-simplified answers.
The three therapists who will be a part of this session work in a variety of mental health settings outside of athletics. I want to have this conversation with people outside of the athletic system with the hope that we can learn new perspectives to apply in athletics.
