The 5 Secrets of Student-Athlete Surveys Every Coach Needs to Know

Overview:

Anonymous student-athlete surveys are difficult for coaches to talk about because they usually are void of details and force coaches into a defensive stance. This process leaves coaches guessing and trying to provide answers without context. Many times Administrators approach anonymous surveys as a tool for feedback. The reality is information without context creates confusion. Coach Carlson will teach participants how to navigate this process in a healthy and productive way.

Who:

*This session is ideal for College Coaches.

Additional Details:

*This session will NOT be recorded and is limited to 25 Coaches.

*No refunds will be offered for conflicts or no-shows.

Mental Health & Student-Athletes; A "Q & I" Session

Mental Health & Student-Athletes; A "Q & I" Session

Overview:

I am so excited about this format for this session! I want you to imagine that you have a front-row seat to a conversation taking place at my dinner table. Seated at the table are myself and three therapists and you get to witness our conversation. I will be asking all the questions that have been burning in my mind regarding mental health and student-athletes. I may ask things like; What do we know about brain development that might inform how we approach conversations about mental health? Should therapy be a requirement to participate in athletics? What does it mean to coach with a trauma-informed lens? If a student-athlete says they want to talk because think they are depressed should a coach talk with them or refer them to a counseling center? How is emotional wellness different from mental health? How do we approach a student-athlete who says their mental health is bad but they don't yet have a mental health diagnosis?

We are calling this session a "Q & I" which stands for "Questions and Insights." Mental health for student-athletes is complex, contextual, and very layered so our approach will be to hear from therapists who have different skills and have trained in different modalities. They will be sharing their insights rather than over-simplified answers.

The three therapists who will be a part of this session work in a variety of mental health settings outside of athletics. I want to have this conversation with people outside of the athletic system with the hope that we can learn new perspectives to apply in athletics.

Who:

*This session is open to anyone (teachers, coaches, administrators ...) who are interested in the conversation. Since most of my athletic clients are in college my questions will be geared, but not limited, to that demographics.

Additional Details:

*This session will be recorded and the link will be live for 30 days.

*This session is limited to 100 participants.

*You will have the opportunities prior to the event to submit additional questions you would like us to consider.

*No refunds will be offered for cancellations or no-shows.

The Five Secrets of Student-Athlete Surveys That Every Coach Needs to Know

Anonymous student-athlete surveys often catch a coach off-guard. This 90-minute interactive Zoom session was designed by veteran NCAA coach Becky Carlson to help coaches navigate this process. This session will include large group teaching, break-out rooms, case studies for problem-solving, and creative activities to help coaches process the information. Molly Grisham, former college coach and current consultant, will moderate the call. Register here.

Who should attend:

This session is ideal for Fall and Winter sport coaches who desire to prepare in advance of next year's surveys. Spring coaches with surveys and evaluations fast approaching will also benefit.

Why you should attend:

Anonymous student-athlete surveys are difficult for coaches to talk about because they usually are void of details and force coaches into a defensive stance. This process leaves coaches guessing and trying to provide answers without context. Many times Administrators approach anonymous surveys as a tool for feedback. The reality is, information with context creates confusion.

Coach Carlson will teach participants how to navigate this process in a healthy and productive way.

Additional details:

  • We will limit the registration to 25 coaches to allow for everyone to be heard. If needed we will add additional sessions.

  • We will not be recording the session to protect the confidentiality of the coaches.

  • Refunds will not be offered for cancellations or no-shows.

  • We will meet on April 27th, 2022, from 7:00pmEST - 8:30pmEST.

For this event, we will meet online for two hours and we will hear from one speaker at a time which our participants have requested on past surveys! The proceeds from this event will benefit the Jessica Kern Foundation. Jessica was a speaker at a previous event of ours and this is a way to give back to her and the work she is doing.

The Leadership Experience ONLINE

OVERVIEW:

The Molly Grisham Leadership Experience will be offered ONLINE in 2020! We have been offering this event face to face for the last year in places like Mexico City, Philadelphia PA, St. Louis MO, and Stevens Point WI. Due to COVID-19 we will need to do this event virtually but these means we will now have the opportunity to connect with female high school student leaders from all over the global!

EVENT DETAILS:

While we normally offer this event over the course of one or two days, we know that sitting in front of a computer screen for that long is not healthy. As a result, we will break the event into two online sessions with some leadership experiences built into the time between sessions.

July 26th, 2020 3pm Session #1: Online "Becoming a Leader"

July 27th - August 1st: For the week between our two online sessions you will be given ideas (optional homework) of how you can put your leadership skills into action while at home.

August 2nd, 2020 3pm Session #2: Online "Continued Leadership Development & Mentor Meetings"

A Season of Transition: Tending to the Garden of your Soul

A Season of Transition: Tending to the Garden of your Soul

Life is an endless series of transitions. These transitions can at times be filled with anticipation and excitement and at other times can produce anxiety and fear. At this half day retreat we will pause to reflect and explore this particular season of transition by tending to ourselves. Much of our process will be introspective and reflective. We will gather as a large group in a Circle of Trust and utilize readings and creative processes provided by the Center for Courage and Renewal. We will spend additional time in small group and individual work. Our time together will offer a reflective space in the context of a supportive community allowing us to engage questions and think deeply about this season of transition. Additionally, there is a labyrinth on campus that participants are encouraged to use.

Molly Grisham is a trained facilitator in the Geography of Grace series by The Center for Courage and Renewal.

This half day retreat will be hosted at the Peace Tree Center in St. Louis. You can learn more and register here: A Season of Transition: Tending the Garden of Your Soul
